The provinces of Nanning and Guilin of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China are opening direct flights to Cebu starting in March.
Direct flights from these Chinese provinces to Manila will also be reopened soon.
Governor Ma. Biao of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region made this announcement during his bilateral meeting with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia last January 6.
Garcia went with Provincial Board Members Peter John Calderon and Wilfredo Caminero to Nanning to sign the memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the establishment of a sisterhood agreement between Cebu and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Guangxi will be Cebu’s fourth sister province in China. The three are Guangdong, Sichuan and Hainan.
Calderon represented Cebu while Fan Xiaoli, Foreign Affairs Office director-general, represented Guangxi.
The group also attended the First Forum on the China-Asean Free Trade Area (Focafta), held last January 7 and 8.
Garcia, being a member of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) board, assured to hasten the opening of the flights, which is seen to boost the tourism industry of both provinces.
The sisterhood agreement, on the other hand, may be signed in August during the founding anniversary of Cebu Province.
The two provinces hope to bring their cooperation on agriculture, tourism, business and economy to a new level.
Garcia said she is also thinking of having more media exchanges between the two provinces, as she believes that their undertakings will be best disseminated tough the media.
